Liverpool transfers: Steven Gerrard wants defensive reinforcements
Liverpool transfers: Steven Gerrard wants the Reds to sign defenders this summer after Jamie Carragher's reitrement
Steven Gerrard says he wants Liverpool to sign defenders this summer to help fill the void left by retired centre-half Jamie Carragher.
Brendan Rodgers has already snapped up Kolo Toure on a free transfer and the Northern Irishman has been linked with a move for Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.
And Gerrard admitted it will be strange without Carragher next season and the midfielder expressed his regret that the former England international didn’t postpone his retirement.
“It will feel strange and it will be different. I’m used to hearing his voice from day one of pre-season,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s website.
“But he’s got other things that he needs to focus on; he’s going down the TV avenue and he’s going to be working for Sky, so we all wish him good luck with that.
“Of course, from a selfish point of view I wish he was coming back and doing one more season. Hopefully the replacements we get in perform well for us because they are certainly
big shoes to fill.”
Carragher has already joined the Sky Sports punditry team after captaining Liverpool to a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on his final appearance in May.
And Gerrard is ready to be on the receiving end of criticism from his former team-mate next season.
“That’s standard, that’s a gimme,” added the 33-year-old.
“He needs to show everyone out there that he’s not biased, so I’m sure I’m going to be one of the first names he’s going to attack.
“That’s fine by me; I’ve still got his phone number, I’m still his friend so I’ve still got a chance to have a go back at him.”
