Liverpool transfers: Stewart Downing believes Brendan Rodgers will make a couple of more summer signings
Stewart Downing says he expects Liverpool to make a “few more signings” this summer as the Reds look to mount a top-four challenge.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already signed Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure in the current transfer window.
The Reds have been forced to fend off interest in talisman Luis Suárez as Rodgers looks to keep hold of the Uruguayan, who scored 23 top-flight goals last term.
And Downing is confident Liverpool can launch a bid to secure Champions League football next season – adding the club won’t be distracted by the ongoing Suárez saga.
“What’s going on with Luis isn’t a distraction,” Downing told the Liverpool Echo.
“Pre-season has gone really well so far and we’ve got some good results. Now we want to really push on.
“Since he came back Luis has been training really well and I think whatever happens with his Liverpool future will be sorted out in the next week or two.
“We want to keep all our best players to help us get into the Champions League. That has to be our aim this season.
“We’ve strengthened the squad with the new signings who have come in and I’m sure there will be a few more signings to come.
“If we can reproduce that form we showed in the second half of last season then we’ll have a good chance of breaking into that top four.
“We want Luis to be part of that team. He’s a top player, one of the best in the world, we saw that with the goals he scored last season. It’s up to him and the club to sort things out.”
