Liverpool transfers: Stewart Downing reiterates his desire to stay at the Reds beyond the summer
Stewart Downing has reiterated that he wants to stay at Liverpool amid speculation linking the midfielder with a move to West Ham United.
The England international has endured a mixed two seasons at the Reds after completing a £20m move from Aston Villa to Anfield in the summer of 2011.
The Hammers, who already signed Andy Carroll from Liverpool last month, were thought to be weighing up a bid for Downing, but the winger wants to stay.
“I’m here to stay,” Downing told Liverpool’s. “I’m enjoying it – especially last season. I got a good run in the team. Hopefully that will continue, and I need to work hard.
“I want it to continue. It’s why I came here – to play in a successful team. I want that to continue as long as possible.”
Downing appeared to be heading towards an Anfield exit before turning around his season in the second half of the campaign.
And the 28-year-old admitted it feels great to have the club supporters behind him after a turbulent start to his Reds career.
“It’s brilliant to have people behind you, the fans,” added Downing. “When they’re behind you, you want to do well for them and play well.”
