Gary Neville has backed Manchester United’s pursuit of a central-midfielder – but believes the current squad is more than adequate should the Red Devils fail to strengthen.

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fàbregas is top of United’s wish list, with David Moyes confirming the Premier League champions had submitted a second bid for the Spaniard on Monday.

Everton’s Belgium international Marouane Fellaini is another touted target following the former Everton manager’s appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor.

While former United right-back Neville reckons a central-midfielder would be a good acquisition, the England coach is confident the current squad has sufficient strength to launch a title bid.

“For United fans I do think a top central-midfielder would be a good addition however if the right one can’t be bought, stick with what’s in the current squad,” Neville posted on his Twitter account.

Earlier on Tuesday, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique warned his former club that they were wasting their time trying to sign Fàbregas.

“United are wasting their time. It took a long time for Cesc to get his dream move back home and he won’t give it up,” Pique told the Sun.

“This is home, it is where his family is, and he is playing with his closest friends.

“He has told us he is happy and that he intends to stay with Barcelona.”
