Kevin Strootman says he is excited about playing for a “great club” like Roma after the former Manchester United completed a switch to Serie A.

The 23-year-old playmaker was one of PSV Eindhoven’s standout performers last season as his seven goals in 42 appearances fired his side to a second-place finish in the Eredivisie.

It has prompted interest from the Red Devils, but the Netherlands international appears to have his heart set on a move to the Italian capital.

“I am very excited to be able to play for this great club,” said Strootman.

“It is the next stage in my career development after being at Sparta, FC Utrecht and PSV, a club at which I had a lot of fun.”

The PSV man also revealed he spoke to former AC Milan midfielder Mark Van Bommel about a potential move to Roma.

Strootman told De Telegraaf: “He was the man with experience of Italy.

“Mark said how great the passion of the fans was, how special the atmosphere in the stadiums was and how there was a totally different football culture.

“What counts for me is the number of big games I am going to play here.

“I will train every day with top players and get to play against the likes of Inter Milan, Juventus and Napoli.”
