Man United transfers: Paul Scholes keen on Cesc Fàbregas arrival
Man United transfers: Paul Scholes believes Cesc Fàbregas would be the ideal player to replace him at Old Trafford
Paul Scholes believes Cesc Fàbregas would be the ideal player to replace him at Manchester United.
The Red Devils are thought to have had three separate bids for the 26-year-old rejected by Barcelona this month as David Moyes looks to bolster his midfield options ahead of the new season.
However, the Catalan club on Friday once again insisted that the playmaker is not for sale at any price this summer.
But Scholes, who hung up his playing boots at the end of last season, believes the Spain international would be a perfect signing for United.
“I think there are a lot of players at United who have left like me and are never really missed,” Scholes is quoted as saying by Metro.
“Cesc Fàbregas is a top, top player and he has been with Arsenal, he knows the Premier League and would a dream really to sign somebody like that [to replace me].
“He is a player who can score goals and has set them up for Robin van Persie. That would be nice if we can sign him. Hopefully we can do it.”
Scholes’ comments come after newly-appointed Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino insisted that the La Liga champions have no intention of selling the former Arsenal captain.
“Fàbregas is a top player and we are proud to have him here,” said Martino on Friday after being appointed as Tito Vilanova’s successor at Camp Nou on a two-year contract.
“It doesn’t matter what the offer from Manchester United is. We are counting on him.
“It is normal that many clubs are interested in Cesc, and that is a source of pride for us. But we will reject all bids.”
Fàbregas sealed a £35m move back to his boyhood club Barcelona in August 2011 after spending eight seasons in the Premier League with Arsenal.
