Man United transfers: Pep Guardiola says he wants to sign Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara this summer
Pep Guardiola says he wants to sign Manchester United target Thiago Alcantara from his former club Barcelona.
The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with a swoop for the young playmaker, who is available for £18m due to a clause in his contract which remains active until the end of July.
Thiago was limited to just 15 starts in La Liga last season, scoring two goals and making five assists as the Spain Under-21 international failed to dislodge the likes of Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fàbregas and Xavi.
And Guardiola, who was officially unveiled as Bayern Munich manager on Thursday, has set his sights on signing the 22-year-old this summer to add further quality to a midfield already containing Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Mario Gotze.
“Thiago is the only player I want, that’s what I told them,” Guardiola told a news conference. “It’ll be him or no one.
“We have many players but we the need the special quality that Thiago Alcantara brings.
“The club will decide. I told them my opinion.
“I don’t think [adding another midfielder] will be a problem. I spoke to club about my concept and told them why I want Thiago Alcantara.
“Nobody will leave Barcelona, unless they feel they won’t play much. He wants to play. That’s why I proposed him to the club.”
