Ed Woodward has reiterated that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is not for sale this summer amid interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

The 27-year-old’s future has been a source of constant speculation after the England international handed in a transfer request before the club’s final Premier League game of the season.

The former Everton striker only scored a modest 12 top-flight goals last term as the Red Devils won their 13th Premier League crown under former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with a move for Rooney, but the club’s executive vice-chairman Woodward is adamant Rooney won’t be sold.

“I’m not surprised clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal want Wayne – he’s a top player,” Woodward told the Daily Mirror.

“He’s not for sale and we won’t be selling him. We are not looking to change the way we do things – it’s been a successful formula.

“We want the manager to be investing. We are not in the business of delivering him players. That structure works for some, but not here at United. We backed Sir Alex Ferguson – we will do the same with David Moyes.”
