Sir Bobby Charlton says Manchester United won’t make any rash decisions on Wayne Rooney’s future and hopes the striker stays at Old Trafford.

The England international has been the subject of an offer from Chelsea after the 27-year-old reportedly had a transfer request rejected at the end of the season.

Rooney, who scored a disappointing 12 Premier League goals last term, was forced to return from United’s pre-season tour of Asia due to an injury problem.

And Charlton, who scored 249 goals for the Red Devils, admits he wants Rooney to break the World Cup winner’s United goal record at the Red Devils.

“Wayne Rooney is a Manchester United player and I think he will continue to be a Manchester United player,” said Charlton.

“We’re not silly enough to make any rash decisions and I think he will continue to be a Manchester United player.

“I was hoping one day he might score as many goals as I had and that would have been really nice if it was at our club – and I’m still thinking that way.”
