Manuel Pellegrini says he is confident Manchester City will finish ahead of Manchester United next season.

The Chilean outlined his targets for the Citizens at his first news conference since being named as Roberto Mancini’s replacement in June.

And Pellegrini reckons he can restore City to the top of the Premier League, with the South American pointing to his past successes against the Red Devils.

“I know the most important thing for City fans is to beat United. I’m sure we will do it and this year, the same as other years, we will be on top of United,” said Pellegrini.

“I also played United twice with Villarreal in the Champions League, in 2006 and 2009, and both times we qualified for the last 16 and they didn’t.”

Pellegrini also vowed to improve City’s record in the Champions League after the Citizens were eliminated at the group stage in successive seasons under Mancini.

“One of the important reasons I’m here is the way my teams have always played. We are going to play an attractive game, always in the opposite side, always an attacking team,” he added.

“Five or six teams are always trying to win the Premier League and I’ll try to do that with Manchester City.

“I think that the Premier League is so important, as is the Champions League. I know the last two years weren’t good for Manchester City in Europe, but I’ll try to change that.”
