Steven Gerrard is confident Liverpool can break back into the top four next season following their seventh-place finish in 2012-13.

The Reds ended up 12 points behind fourth-placed Arsenal after Brendan Rodgers’ first season in charge at the Merseyside outfit.

However, Liverpool captain Gerrard believes Rodgers’ men displayed flashes of the form needed to qualify for the Champions League.

And the 33-year-old midfielder is backing Liverpool to be more consistent next term and challenge for a top-four finish.

“The final five or six months of the season were fantastic – I think it was top-four form,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s website.

“We certainly finished the season really strongly, but we were very inconsistent from August to Christmas.

“That’s the reason we never managed to achieve what we set out to do, which was a top-four finish. But I felt at times in the season we played some brilliant football.

“If we can find that level on a consistent basis, I’ve got confidence we can break into the top four.”
