Paolo Di Canio believes Sunderland’s new signing Jozy Altidore is among the best strikers in Europe after the American sealed a move to the Black Cats on Tuesday.

The USA international has signed a four-year deal with the Black Cats after Sunderland agreed an undisclosed fee with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

The 23-year-old scored an impressive 50 goals in 93 games for the Eredivisie outfit, and Di Canio is delighted to bolster his attacking options.

“I’m really pleased because a new arrival can benefit the squad and also individuals because there is competition up front,” Di Canio told the club’s official website.

“Altidore is one of the top strikers in Europe. He only joined us on Tuesday but I’m very happy, curious and excited because I have a very good attacking side at the moment.”

Altidore has scored 17 goals in 60 appearances for his national side, while he previously played in the Premier League with Hull City.
