Wayne Rooney has moved to play down fears about the extent of the hamstring injury which forced him to return home from Manchester United’s pre-season tour of Asia.

The Red Devils said on Thursday that the striker will be out of action for a month after sustaining the problem during a training session two days ahead of United’s first pre-season friendly against a Singha All Star XI.

Rooney wrote on his Facebook page: “Gutted to have picked up a niggling injury especially as training was going so well, heading back to Manchester to have it assessed fully but early indications are nothing to worry about.”

A United statement added: “Following a scan this evening on a hamstring injury sustained in training, it has been decided Wayne Rooney should return home immediately for further assessment and rehabilitation.”

Speculation over the 27-year-old’s future remains rife, despite new manager David Moyes’ insistence that the striker will not be sold.

Rooney, who is a reported target for Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford since it emerged he asked to leave the club towards the end of last season.
