Xabi Alonso has backed Brendan Rodgers to guide Liverpool back into the Champions League in the coming seasons.

The Reds missed out on qualifying for Europe completely last season after the Merseyside club finished seventh in Rodgers’ first campaign at Anfield.

However, former Liverpool midfielder Alonso is convinced that the Northern Irishman is the right man to lead the club back into Europe’s elite club competition.

“We trust that in the next years, the team will come together, become more competitive and reach the Champions League,” Alonso told estoesanfield.com.

“Maybe he found it a bit harder than he expected, but at the end of the season with the new signings the team played quite well.

“When Brendan arrived we knew it was a project for a few years, and step by step he started the season trying to establish his methods.”

Real Madrid midfielder Alonso, who has been linked with a return to Anfield, this week ruled out a move back to the Premier League.

“The Premier League? No,” Alonso said when asked about a summer switch. “No way, no chance.”
