Arsenal 1 Galatasary 2: Wenger rues ‘classic’ Drogba performance
Arsenal 1 Galatasary 2: Arsene Wenger praises Didier Drogba after the Gala striker fired his side to cup glory
Arsene Wenger admitted Galatasaray striker Didier Drobga produced a “classic” performance to deny his Arsenal side Emirates Cup glory.
The Gunners were set to win the pre-season tournament at their home stadium after Theo Walcott’s first-half opener, before the former Chelsea striker won a dubious penalty and calmly slotted his spot-kick past Wojciech Szczesny in the 72nd minute.
The 35-year-old, who was the subject of jeers from the Gunners supporters whenever he touched the ball, capped his second-half cameo with powerful run and clinical finish to fire Galatasaray to victory with three minutes remaining.
And Wenger ruefully conceded the Blues legend capitalised on a tiring Arsenal defence after the interval and described the Ivorian’s collision with Ignasi Miquel which led to the penalty award as “classic Drogba”.
“Well, he did well when he came on,” Wenger told a post-match news conference at Emirates Stadium.
“He still has his resources. We could see yesterday that he’s kept his physical strength and he has an intelligent game.”
The Arsenal manager continued: “I must say we were exhausted in the end, especially Per Mertesacker, who has played two full games after coming back from Asia.
“Drogba took advantage. Honestly, the penalty was very, very, very, very soft.”
He added: “It was classic Drogba.”
