Arsenal 2 Fenerbahce 0: Wenger hails ‘confident’ Ramsey
Arsenal 2 Fenerbahce 0: Arsene Wenger singles out Aaron Ramsey for praise after the midfielder fires Gunners into group stage
Arsene Wenger singled out Aaron Ramsey for special praise after the midfielder fired Arsenal past Fenerbahce and into the group stage of the Champions League.
The Wales international scored either side of the break at Emirates Stadium to wrap up a 2-0 win over the Turkish side and seal a 5-0 aggregate triumph.
“He’s improving every game,” Wenger told ITV1. “He’s a young player and that means he’s getting better and better.
“Confidence [is the difference], it’s as simple as that. A year ago he would have controlled that ball [for his second goal] and maybe missed his control and not scored.
“But he works very hard on his technique and as well he is much more confident because he feels people trust him.”
Wenger’s Arsenal will now await Thursday’s group stage draw to discover their opponents in the next round.
And the Frenchman reflected on a “fantastic” achievement by his side as they secured their third straight win in all competitions.
“In the first half we were a bit lucky to be 1-0 up, they had chances,” he said. “When you’re 3-0 up after the first game, subconsciously you think it’s half done.
“But in the Champions League nobody accepts going out without a fight and they did that tonight.
“In the second half we were in control and we qualified, which is what we wanted. It’s a fantastic achievement.”
