Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger says he won't rule out signing Mathieu Flamini despite the midfielder only training at the Gunners

Arsene Wenger says Mathieu Flamini is just working on his fitness at Arsenal – but has refused to rule out the possibility of signing the free agent.

The out-of-favour France international was released by Serie A side AC Milan after his contract expires this summer following a mixed five-year spell at the San Siro outfit.

Flamini, who has three caps for Les Bleus, moved to Italy from Arsenal in a controversial free transfer after failing to agree a new deal with the north London side in 2008.

Wenger was reported to be weighing up an offer to secure Flamini’s return, but the Arsenal boss insists the midfielder is just using the club’s training facilities.

“He is just here to work on his fitness and he does that very well,” Wenger told a news conference on Friday.

However, when the 63-year-old was pushed on his potential interest in Flamini, Wenger hinted there could be a chance the former Marseille man seals a return to Arsenal.

He added: “I don’t say there’s no chance and I don’t say there is a chance (of signing him).”

Wenger has also been linked with a move for Real Madrid duo Karim Benzema and Ángel di María in recent weeks.

But the Arsenal manager was remaining tight-lipped on the possibility of the Los Blancos pair moving to The Emirates.

“I don’t want to speak about names, you (the media) do that very well.”
