Terry Neill believes Arsenal should kick off their late summer spending spree with moves for goalkeeper Júlio Cesar and defender Ashley Williams.

The Gunners have so far only signed 20-year-old French striker Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre on a free transfer this summer despite being linked with a host of top players, including Luis Suárez and Wayne Rooney.

Arsenal are reported to have tabled a £10m bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye in the wake of the north Londoners’ shock 3-1 defeat by Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

But former Gunners manager Neill reckons the club need to start by bringing in the QPR shot-stopper and Swansea defender.

“They need the spine of a team,” Neill told talkSPORT. “The goalkeeper Cesar would be the first name you put on your team-sheet.

“That was one of the reasons I worked so hard to get Pat Jennings from Tottenham, because top goalkeepers scare teams.

“They could have got Williams, the centre-back from Swansea, for £12m. Now he will cost lot more. And I did tell the Arsenal people four of five years ago about Victor Wanyama. They said ‘thanks Terry, but no thanks’.

“He would have cost two goalposts and a bag of balls but now he’s gone to Southampton for £12m, and he’s a superb defensive midfield player.”
