Arsenal should go for Rooney if Suárez is staying, says Merson
Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes the Gunners should pay over the odds to sign Manchester United's Wayne Rooney
Paul Merson believes Arsenal should pay over the odds for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney if the Gunners fail to sign Luis Suárez.
The Uruguay international looks set to remain at Liverpool beyond the summer after revealing the affection from the club’s supporters means the forward will stay – for now.
Earlier this summer, Arsenal had lodged two unsuccessful bids for the controversial South American, with the 26-year-old expressing his interest in a potential move to Emirates Stadium.
And former Arsenal midfielder Merson wants Arsene Wenger to make a huge offer for another unhappy forward – Rooney – if the Gunners have been thwarted in their attempts to sign Suárez.
“A lot depends on what Arsenal do [if the Gunners want to finish top four],” Merson told Sky Sports.
“The directors had a meeting at the end of the season, said they’d got a lot of money for the first time and made a lot of promises, but they haven’t
bought anybody except Yaya Sanogo on a free from Auxerre.
“It would really mug the fans off if they don’t get anybody. If they don’t get Suárez then they have to go and get Rooney, even if they pay OTT.”
