Theo Walcott has backed Yaya Sanogo to do well for Arsenal in seasons to come, admitting he was impressed by the Frenchman’s Gunners debut on Sunday.

The 20-year-old striker started Arsenal’s Emirates Cup clash against Galatasaray on Sunday and showed some glimpses of his ability before being substituted by Arsene Wenger in the second half.

And Walcott, who scored the Gunners’ opener before two second-half goals from Didier Drogba condemned the home side to a 2-1 defeat at Emirates Stadium, has been impressed by what he has seen of Sanogo thus far.

“He’s a strong boy,” Walcott told Arsenal’s website. “He’s only had a couple of training sessions with us. I’ve only trained with him a couple of times.

“He’s a nice lad and I think he’ll do very well for us. There’s a lot of competition for that position. I think he showed his qualities in patches today definitely.”

Sanogo joined Arsenal from Auxerre on a free transfer earlier this summer.

And speaking on Saturday, Gunners boss Wenger backed the striker to make an impact at Emirates Stadium in the forthcoming season.

Wenger said: “We have signed Sanogo [but] he has not made the headlines. Why? Because he didn’t cost £50 to £100m.

“Sanogo will surprise you because your expectation doesn’t look to be too high. He’s a top class striker.”

The Frenchman added: “He [Sanogo] has only had a few days training I think what he did was encouraging.

“He looks to be a very good player but he’s not completely fit. I’m convinced in the next two weeks you will see a different Sanogo.”
