Darren Lehmann has called for cricket fans Down Under “to give it to” England’s Stuart Broad so he “cries” and “goes home”in the return Ashes series later this year.

The bizarre radio interview with Australian network Triple M comes after Broad decided against walking in the first Test at Trent Bridge, when he edged to first slip off Ashton Agar.

Broad’s decision has seen him castigated by parts of the media – not to mention by the Australian team.

“I hope the Australian public give it to him right from the word go for the whole [Australian] summer,” said Lehmann.

“And I hope he cries and goes home. I don’t advocate walking, but when you hit it to first slip it’s pretty hard.”

“Certainly our players haven’t forgotten, they’re calling him everything under the sun as they go past so I would hope the Australian public are the same because that was just blatant cheating.”

England and Australia are currently contesting the fifth Test, but proceedings will no doubt be overshadowed by Lehmann’s rant.

The Oval Test will be followed by another five-Test series in Australia, beginning in November at Brisbane.

Broad admitted this week to knowing that he nicked the ball, which has only incensed the tourists further.

Lehmann continued: “I hope everyone gets stuck into him. The way he has carried on is ridiculous.

“He knew he hit it at the slip. The biggest problem there is the poor umpire cops all the crap that he gets in the paper and Stuart Broad makes him look like a fool.

“From my point of view it’s poor, so I hope the public get stuck into him.”
