Bayern Munich 2 Chelsea 2: Pep Guardiola is adamant the best team won after watching his side beat the 10-man Blues on penalties
Pep Guardiola was adamant that the best team won after watching his Bayern Munich side beat 10-man Chelsea on penalties to win the Uefa Super Cup after a thrilling clash in Prague.
Romelu Lukaku missed the decisive penalty in the shootout after Chelsea looked destined to seal victory despite Ramires’ late red card at the Eden Arena.
Fernando Torres had opened the scoring early in the first half after a sweeping attack, but Franck Ribery levelled shortly after the break with a long-range drive. Eden Hazard looked to have netted a winner after the tie went into extra-time, but Javi Martinez’s equaliser right at the death forced penalties.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho was adamant that Ramires should not have been shown a second yellow card, and also claimed that the “best team lost” after the game.
But Guardiola chose to respectfully reject Mourinho’s claims in his post-match news conference.
“It’s his opinion,” said Guardiola. “It’s normal that he can say that his team deserved better than what happened but I have too my opinion. My opinion is that we played so well with the ball [and] without the ball. We were so good.
“The yellow card is a question for the referee, not for me. I am a coach, I put 11 players in the field and I try to make them play as best as possible for us.
I’m just a coach and I try to respect my colleagues and my players. After what we have seen today, I’m so, so happy for the performance.
“Today we deserved it; we played unbelievable, good football.”
He added: “To win against Chelsea and Mourinho is always so difficult and for that reason we are so happy.”
