Roberto Martínez felt Everton were denied a clear penalty after the Toffees were forced to settle for a second successive stalemate at Cardiff City.

Peter Whittingham tested Toffees goalkeeper Tim Howard with an inswinging corner in the 17th minute before Leighton Baines was brought to ground by Gary Medel in the Welsh side’s penalty area.

Referee Anthony Taylor waved play on despite the Chilean going to ground and failing to make contact with the ball, while Nikica Jelavić came closest for the visitors from open play in the first half.

The Croatia international failed to capitalize on another chance created by Ross Barkley after the break, while Baines tested Marshall from long range but Martínez was left to fume over the penalty incident.

“I think Leighton was shocked because you do not get many situations where the player goes to ground like that and does not touch the ball,” Martinez told BBC Sport.

“It was such a clear incident that I thought the referee must have had his view blocked for him not to give it. We were very shocked not to get a penalty.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay added on Taylor’s call: “I only saw it at the time, I have not seen a replay. I suppose it was close. Gary Medel feels he never made contact and that Leighton Baines was looking for the penalty all the way.”
