Lukasz Zaluska Showed very good reactions to deny Downing and Aspas in the first half. Replaced by Forster at half-time after keeping a clean sheet. 6/10

Adam Matthews Did a good defensive job and made a number of useful runs forward for Neil Lennon’s side. Solid. 6

Mikael Lustig Did well at keeping the impressive Coutinho at bay in the first half before being subbed off for Fisher at the break. 5

Steven Mouyokolo The Frenchman was solid at the back alongside Matthews and helped to keep Celtic ahead following Balde’s opener. 6

Jackson Irvine Did a decent job in the middle of the park for Lennon’s men without sparkling. 5

Emilio Izaguirre Dealt with the attacking threat of Downing and Johnson relatively well. A decent defensive showing, but offered little going forwards. 6

Beram Kayal A composed presence in the heart of the Celtic midfield throughout. 6

Dylan McGeouch Made some good powerful runs to drive the play forwards from the heart of midfield. 6

Tony Watt Won a few corners and held the ball up well but rarely conjured up any clear-cut openings. 5

Anthony Stokes Not a spectacular display from the Celtic captain. Did little apart from hold the ball up well and direct the odd header towards goal. Got himself booked for a reckless lunge on Coutinho. 5

Amido Balde A very impressive display from the 22-year-old Portuguese. Scored the opener in the 12th minute and held off challenges from Toure and Wisdom with ease to make himself a constant nuisance amongst the Liverpool rearguard. 9

Substitutes:

Fraser Forster Wasn’t really troubled in the second half, apart from when he beaten by Toure, before the goal was ruled out. 6

Stuart Findlay Came on after the break and made a great defensive block to deny Ibe a shot on goal late in the second half. 6

Bahrudin Atajic Didn’t really make an impact after coming on in the 70th minute. N/A

Liam Henderson N/A

Paul George N/A

Darnell Fisher N/A

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet Could perhaps have done more to prevent Balde’s opener after his shot deflected off him and into the net. Otherwise a solid showing from the Belgian shot-stopper. 6

Jose Enrique Was wasteful after carving a few good openings going forward. Did a decent defensive job. 5

Andre Wisdom Struggled to handle the physical threat posed by Balde in the first half but didn’t make any glaring errors. 5

Kolo Toure A calm and composed display, as you would expect from the Premier League veteran. Had the ball in the net in the second half but was ruled out for being offside. 6

Glen Johnson Spent more of the game in the Celtic half than his own. Could have drawn Liverpool level in the 21st minute when he missed a one-on-one opportunity. 6

Philippe Coutinho A hugely impressive display from the talented young Brazilian. Looked dangerous whenever he was on the ball, showed intent to get forward with darting, meaningful runs. His passing was exquisite throughout and he was at the heart of most of the Reds’ attacks. 8

Lucas Leiva Did his usual silent job in front of the Liverpool rearguard to good effect. 6

Joe Allen A very quiet game for the Wales international. Did little in the first half and was subbed off in the 57th minute. 4

Steven Gerrard Not his best display. The Liverpool skipper’s most meaningful contribution when his free-kick was nodded in by Toure before the goal was chalked off for offside. 5

Stewart Downing Appeared to be full of energy but produced little of note, apart from a powerful shot in the first half which forced a decent save from Zaluska. Guilty of sloppy passes on a number of occasions, too. 5

Iago Aspas Worked hard all afternoon but got muscled off the ball a couple of times. Wasted a few good openings, the best carved out for him by Coutinho’s excellent pass in the first half. 5

Substitutes:

Daniel Sturridge Offered Liverpool a new attacking outlet when he came on in the second half. Showed some good touches and didn’t appear to be too far off the pace despite only recently returning from injury. Could have snatched a late equaliser but his lob dropped just wide. 6

Jordan Henderson Did very little as the game petered out in the second half apart from fire a tame shot straight at Forster. 5

Jordan Ibe Didn’t make an impact after coming on late in the second half. N/A
