Chelsea’s Gary Cahill: Bayern display proves we can conquer Europe
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill believes the Blues' Uefa Super Cup display proves they're among favourites for Champions League title
Gary Cahill believes Chelsea’s Uefa Super Cup performance proves the Blues are among the favourites for this season’s Champions League crown.
Jose Mourinho’s men appeared to be on the brink of securing their first silverware of the season after Eden Hazard’s strike in extra-time following goals from Fernando Torres and Franck Ribery either side of the interval.
However, Bayern midfielder Javi Martínez netted an equaliser in the 120th minute of the Prague showpiece to force a penalty shootout, with Blues youngster Romelu Lukaku missing the decisive spot-kick.
Despite the disappointment of losing Cahill, who has won the Champions League and Europa League since moving to the Blues in 2011, reckons the west London side showed their quality against holders Bayern.
And with Mourinho at the helm, the England international is confident Chelsea are among the favourites to lift the European Cup in Benfica’s Stadium of Light next May.
“Yes [we’re among the favourites]. I think the squad’s definitely stronger,” Cahill said.
“We’ve got a great manager and everyone’s pushing in the right direction. I’d have loved to see what would have happened if it was 11 v 11, because the game plan was going in our favour.
“We put up a tough test for Bayern, a team that were devastating in all competitions last season, and I’m sure they’re going to be one of the favourites again.
“But I’m sure if you ask their players, they’ll say they had a tough night.”
