Jose Mourinho declared that he will “try until the last day” to add a striker to his Chelsea squad when quizzed about a possible third bid for Wayne Rooney.

The Blues have made two unsuccessful offers for the Manchester United forward so far this summer as the uncertainty over the 27-year-old’s future continues.

Rooney played the final 30 minutes of United’s opening-day win at Swansea City on Saturday evening, notching up two assists in the 4-1 victory.

And amid reports Chelsea are considering making a third £40m bid for the England international, Mourinho appeared to signal that he has not given up his pursuit of the former Everton forward.

“We will try till the last day to add a new player to the squad. A striker,” said Mourinho after watching his side beat Hull City 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. “But in this moment every striker has a club.

“Every striker belongs to somebody. And I don’t think it’s ethical I name players who belong to other clubs.

“But you know which players we can sniff a situation with and always in an ethical way. If we have to make a bid, we make it in an official way. We don’t speak to players but to clubs.

“We don’t try to influence players to behave in a certain way, as other clubs do. We behave in the correct manner and we’ll try for that until the last day of the transfer window.”
