Chelsea transfers: Mourinho has ‘nothing more to say’ on Rooney
Chelsea transfers: Jose Mourinho suggests he has given up in his attempts to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United
Jose Mourinho has suggested that Chelsea have given up in their attempts to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United this summer.
The Blues confirmed the arrival of Samuel Eto’o on a free transfer from Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday after Mourinho gave Rooney a 48-hour deadline to decide whether he wants to stay at Old Trafford following Monday’s goalless draw against the defending Premier League champions.
The 27-year-old England international’s future has been a source of constant speculation this summer after Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney had a transfer request rejected by the Red Devils towards the end of last season.
United have been firm in their stance that Rooney is not for sale, and asked whether the Blues are still interested in bringing him to Stamford Bridge, Mourinho appeared to suggest that they will not be making another move before Monday’s transfer deadline.
“On Rooney, I told you what I have to say,” Mourinho said.
“I think I made it very, very clear that we didn’t start the process that started all the stories you wrote during these last weeks.
“And we have nothing more to say. He is a Manchester United player and no more than that.”
Meanwhile, Eto’o has expressed his delight at securing a free transfer to the Premier League to be reunited with Mourinho after playing under the Portuguese coach during his spell at Inter Milan.
“I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible,” said Eto’o, who has signed a one-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
“It wasn’t a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.
“The first thing I need to do is adapt myself as quickly as possible to the team. I want to try and enjoy the football as much as possible and I feel if I am doing that, everybody watching will enjoy watching me.”
