Lou Macari has questioned how Wayne Rooney can be unhappy at Manchester United amid speculation linking the striker with a move to Chelsea.

Former Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the Premier League champions had rejected a transfer request from Rooney at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

Chelsea have tried to lure the England international to Stamford Bridge with two bids already this summer, with the Blues expected to test United’s resolve with a third offer.

But Macari, who made 329 league appearances for the Red Devils between 1973 and 1984, can’t understand why Rooney is looking to leave the 20-time English champions.

“How can you be unhappy as a professional footballer in the Premier League these days? You are getting well looked after and well paid, life’s wonderful,” Macari told BBC World News.

“When I saw the headlines that he was frustrated and unhappy, that didn’t go down (well) with me, not at all.

He added: “It’s Wayne’s camp that have made all the moves and Manchester United can afford to sit back and get the player ready for the start of the season.”
