Chelsea transfers: Former Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan doubts the club will sell Wayne Rooney in the current window

Mike Phelan believes Manchester United won’t be willing to sell Wayne Rooney with 11 days left in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old’s future has been a source of constant debate over the course of the off-season, with Chelsea launching two unsuccessful bids to sign the England international.

In May, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the Premier League champions rejected a transfer request from Rooney, while the United legend’s successor David Moyes has reiterated his desire to keep the striker.

And former United assistant manager Phelan believes the 20-time English champions won’t consider selling Rooney unless United have a replacement lined up after Jose Mourinho said the Blues are lining up a third bid.

“I can’t see United letting him go at this late stage if they want to let him go at all,” Phelan told BBC Radio Manchester.

“If they bring in another striker possibly their stance might change but if they bring in a midfielder and a full-back surely you would want to keep Wayne Rooney as part of that.

“The one thing that needs to be resolved is if Wayne Rooney still wants to be at Manchester United.”

Premier League champions United face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday night.
