Chelsea transfers: Mourinho delivers update on Rooney and Luiz
Chelsea transfers: Jose Mourinho says Blues will "wait and see" over bid to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United
Jose Mourinho says Chelsea will “wait and see” if they will be able to prise Wayne Rooney away from Manchester United this summer – and has once again insisted that David Luiz is not for sale.
The Blues are understood to have had two bids for the Manchester United striker turned down by the Red Devils this summer as the uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford continues.
The 27-year-old has played no part in United’s pre-season tour due to injury but started England’s 3-2 win over Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday.
The Red Devils maintain that Rooney, who scored 12 league goals last season, is not for sale.
But asked if he is hopeful of signing Rooney before the September deadline, Mourinho replied: “No. I’m just a Chelsea manager, every one of us [managers] is looking always to try to strengthen our squads.
“We say ‘no’ but we lie because until the last day we’re all waiting for something to happen, even when we say we’re happy with our squad we lie because we always want to make it happen.
“We’ll see what happens, not just with us, but with Manchester United as well.”
He added: “I’m enjoying working with these young people, some of their first steps in the Premier League and I’m enjoying this process of formation with a different profile to my previous years here.”
Mourinho also moved to end the speculation surrounding defender Luiz’s future after the Brazilian emerged as one of Barcelona’s top summer transfer targets.
“The club is in the perfect position to say we don’t want to sell these players,” he continued.
“David is one of these players that the club has made a huge investment in. He’s been here just for a couple of years. He’s a very young player, he signed a new contract last year and he was very happy to do it.
“So we want to keep him. We understand that a big club like Barcelona wants the best and that they’re trying to get one of the best central defenders in the world.
“But we’re being very honest also by saying that there is no chance David is leaving.”
Mourinho’s Chelsea kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Hull City on Sunday.
