Chelsea transfers: ‘Wayne Rooney should stay away from Old Trafford’
Chelsea transfers: Ex-Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen says Wayne Rooney should "stay away" from Old Trafford
Former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen has warned Wayne Rooney to “stay far away” from Old Trafford because of the speculation linking the striker with a move away from the club.
Rooney’s future has been a source of relentless speculation in recent days after Chelsea had a bid in the region of £30m for the forward turned down by the Red Devils at the start of the week.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho has singled out the England international as his top transfer target this summer as he looks to bolster his attacking options at Stamford Bridge.
Rooney signalled his desire to leave United when he had a transfer request turned down by the Red Devils towards the end of last season.
However, with his future still up in the air, McQueen believes that Rooney will have incurred the wrath of the United faithful.
“The fans are coming to pay their respects to one of United’s great servants, but I worry they’ll make their voices heard for the wrong reasons if Wayne shows up,” McQueen told Goal.
“If I was Wayne I’d stay as far away from Old Trafford as possible. I will be surprised if he’s anywhere near being on the team sheet.
“You can’t blame the fans for feeling frustrated with Wayne and his reluctance to pledge his future to the club.
“The fans have had to sit there and watch the ‘will he stay or will he go’ soap opera drag on all summer and now they might have their first chance to let Wayne know what they think.
“What really hurts United fans is that it appears Wayne wants to leave for one of their biggest rivals, Chelsea. They might be able to take him going to Real Madrid, Monaco or Paris Saint-Germain, but not another club in England.”
