Chelsea transfers: Wayne Rooney thanks ‘unbelievable’ Man United fans
Chelsea transfers: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney pays credit to the "unbelievable" Red Devils supporters
Wayne Rooney has thanked Manchester United’s fans for their “unbelievable” support in the club’s goalless draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The 27-year-old made his first top-flight start for the Reds Devils after former manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the Premier League champions had rejected a transfer request from the forward in May.
Chelsea have made two bids for the England international during the summer transfer window but Ferguson’s successor David Moyes remains emphatic in his stance the former Everton youth star is not for sale.
Rooney, who was United’s standout performer in the stalemate, had previously failed to comment at any stage about the speculation linking him with the Blues, but the United forward released a statement via his Facebook page on Wednesday.
“It was an unbelievable reaction from the fans, so thank you. I really appreciate your support. It means a lot,” Rooney posted on the social network.
Following 0-0 draw on Monday, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admitted he expects Rooney to remain at the 20-time English champions.
“[United] is a special club with special fans and I think probably now he thinks he wants to stay,” said Mourinho.
“If that is his decision we will respect that and say it is over.
“If now, he does not want to leave, we are out of the thing but we need to know what is happening.”
