Jose Mourinho says Chelsea’s David Luiz has “amazing” potential amid interest from Barcelona.

The popular Brazil international has been the subject of a reported bid from the La Liga champions, who are desperate to reinforce their back four under new boss Gerardo Martino.

However, the Blues have already reiterated that the 26-year-old is not for sale and have rejected the offer as Mourinho attempts to forge a squad capable of winning the Premier League title at Stamford Bridge.

And Mourinho revealed he followed Luiz’s career closely during his spell in charge of Real Madrid.

“I have known of David Luiz from the very beginning so I know him very, very well,” Mourinho told the Sun.

“Before I came back to Chelsea, I watched him week after week.

“I see him as a centre-back because he has an important quality for a footballer – he can build from the back. He is very comfortable and confident with
using the ball from the back – he does not play direct.

“He can improve, especially defensively. He can be much more effective, much more solid. But the potential he has is amazing, incredible.”

Luiz has scored 11 goals in 170 Premier League appearances for Chelsea after joining the west London side from Benfica in 2010.
