Andy Murray was left to rue his inconsistency after suffering a 6-3 6-4 defeat by Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters.

The British No1, who defends his US Open title later this month, was beaten by the Czech sixth seed in one hour and 32 minutes.

“I made too many errors,” said Murray. “I was a bit inconsistent from the back of the court. I’ll need to make sure I’m not making those mistakes heading into the US Open.”

He added: “The court was lively today. It was bouncing pretty high and it was quite tough to control the ball.”

Berdych will now take on Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals in Cincinnati after the Spaniard’s 5-7 6-4 6-3 win over Roger Federer, who will drop to seventh in the world rankings.

“My movement got better, with more intensity,” said Nadal after his win. “I put in more balls on the return, and controlled the baseline, something that didn’t happen the first set and a half.

“The match was very close. I played some good points in important moments.”

Meanwhile, world No1 Novak Djokovic was beaten 7-6 3-6 7-5 by John Isner, who goes on to play Juan Martin del Potro in the last four.
