Crystal Palace 0 Tottenham 1: Jan Vertonghen heaps praise on new signings after Roberto Soldado's penalty wins it for Spurs
Jan Vertonghen heaped praise on Tottenham’s new signings after Roberto Soldado’s penalty handed the north Londoners victory at Crystal Palace.
The Spanish striker, who is one of four new players to arrive at White Hart Lane this summer, slotted home his spot-kick in the 50th minute after Aaron Lennon’s cross was handled by Dean Moxey.
As well as Soldado, Spurs have brought in Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli, with all four players making their Premier League debuts on Sunday.
And Vertonghen believes that Andre Villas-Boas’s men are looking in good shape as they bid to finish in the top four this season.
Vertonghen told Sky Sports: “They’re all strong lads and I think you can see that. Capoue, Paulinho, Roberto scored a goal, Nacer too…
“We have a very strong and big team. We want to play for the prizes and for Champions League qualification and that’s when you need a big team – and they will bring us a lot of extras.”
Reflecting on the result, the Belgian added: “That’s what we wanted [to start with a win], we couldn’t do it last year and of course you want to do better. It’s a good win for us.”
And Chadli, who was handed his competitive Spurs debut by Villas-Boas at Selhurst Park, was pleased after getting his first taste of the English top flight.
“I really enjoyed it,” said Chadli, who joined from FC Twente for £7m. “I think it was a nice game with a lot of chances for us. We have to kill the game earlier but the most important thing is the three points.
“The game is quicker than in Holland but I like the way we play, we play quickly forward and we create chances.”
