Andre Villas-Boas believes Tottenham Hotspur can “always count on” Andros Townsend after the winger starred in a 5-0 victory over Dinamo Tbilisi.

The former Queens Park Rangers was particularly impressive in the first half as the Spurs winger scored a long-range effort to break the deadlock before setting up Paulinho for the visitors’ second.

Tottenham’s club-record signing Roberto Soldado extended the north London side’s lead as he scored twice in the space of nine minutes before Danny Rose sealed a 5-0 victory.

And Villas-Boas praised 21-year-old Townsend for his man-of-the-match performance, adding the experience of playing for the Hoops has aided the midfielder’s development.

“Andros has been working well in training, so we felt it was time to give him an opportunity and he did very well,” Villas-Boas is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“If we have the type of performance we had [from him today] we can always count on him.

“For all the young players we are bringing through, the competition they face is extremely difficult and in my opinion, when you overcome that type of opposition you can only become a top player.

“He is doing it the right way. He seems very focused after last year’s experience.”
