Everton transfers: Redknapp rules out Barton joining Toffees
Everton transfers: Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp says Joey Barton won't be joining the Toffees this summer
Harry Redknapp says Queens Park Rangers’s Joey Barton won’t be joining Everton this summer – but admits Marseille still want the midfielder.
The one-time England international spent a season on loan at l’OM after being deemed surplus to requirements by former Hoops boss Mark Hughes last term.
Barton tweeted at the end of the 2012/13 campaign that he would not be playing for the west London side in the Championship this season as he hoped to complete a permanent move to France in the summer.
But the Manchester City youth graduate, who has spoken of his desire to join Everton, featured in QPR’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, creating the club’s second goal.
And Redknapp has dashed Barton’s hopes of completing a dream move to the Toffees by ending any possibility of the Merseyside outfit snapping up the controversial midfielder.
“He did great at Marseille. They qualified for the Champions League and they would like to take him back,” Redknapp told BBC Radio 5 live.
“If he stays here, fantastic. He’s not been a minute’s problem for me.”
“I had never worked with him before, but he has come in and trained hard every day and showed a lot of quality in training.
“He was very good and his attitude and will to win was first class.”
He added: “Marseille is the option. Everton is not an option, I don’t know where that one came from, but it was a silly story.
“If he goes, I wish him well. He is a good player and I think I can handle him. If you are sensible with him and treat him OK he is not a minute’s problem.”
