Owen Hargreaves has defended want-away strikers Wayne Rooney and Luis Suárez amid claims the pair have shown their respective clubs a lack of loyalty.

The former Manchester United midfielder previously played alongside Rooney, who has been linked with a move away from the Red Devils amid interest from Chelsea.

Liverpool’s Suárez has also spoken of his desire to quit Anfield in search of regular Champions League football, with Arsenal submitting two bids for the Uruguayan.

And Hargreaves believes one-club men, such as Steven Gerrard, are a rarity as most players have to travel to further their careers and don’t have the luxury of running out for their home-town club.

“For a lot of players, if they could play football in their local town, they would stay there forever. But the fact of the matter is that people travel for their job, go to a new team and they are employees,” Hargreaves told Manchester Evening News.

“If a player is not performing, the club is looking for a way to sell them or move them on. You see it time and time again.

“Clubs pick and choose when they want to play the loyalty card. Players are employees.”

He added: “You see with Suárez – when he is on the pitch he gives everything. You’ve got to admire that.

“Regardless of whether it is right or wrong what he’s doing, the most important thing is when they go on the pitch if they play well.

“Wayne Rooney does that and Luis Suárez does that for sure.

“The lads have short careers. Some are managed better than others. But a lot of people think the lads should be perfect.

“They are just talented young kids thrust into a situation. People expect them to be great politicians, but they are not. They are great football players.

“Their decision-making is great on the football pitch, but not always off it.”
