Frank Lampard is determined to help Chelsea mount an early challenge for the Premier League title this season under new boss Jose Mourinho.

The midfielder scored the Blues’ second goal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as the west London club kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Hull City.

The game saw Mourinho return to the Stamford Bridge dugout for the first time since leaving the club back in 2007 after the Portuguese coach signed a four-year deal with the Blues earlier this summer.

And Lampard is keen to help the west Londoners make a solid start to the campaign, as Mourinho’s men prepare to welcome Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.

“What we have done in recent years is not stay in the race in the early stages and drop down a few points, then it is hard to get back,” Lampard said.

“We are determined to stay in the race this time and stay right up there.

“What matters is what you do out on the pitch. There was certainly a nice buzz [about Mourinho], but this was his first game and things will settle.

“What we can’t do is settle ourselves, we have to keep pushing.”
