Fulham 1 Arsenal 3: Arsene Wenger praises his side's overall display after watching the Gunners sink the Cottagers
Arsene Wenger heaped praise on his Arsenal side for a convincing team performance after watching the Gunners sink Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Olivier Giroud put the visitors 1-0 up in the 14th minute in west London with a neatly-taken finish after Aaron Ramsey’s shot, before Lukas Podolski doubled the visitors’ advantage with a powerful drive.
The Germany international then made it 3-0 with a sweetly-struck left-footed effort in the 68th minute, before Fulham new-boy Darren Bent tapped home a consolation.
Wenger was thrilled with his side’s reaction as they picked up their first points of the season following the shock 3-1 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.
“I’m pleased because we played like a real team,” Wenger told BT Sport. “It’s never easy to play away in the Champions League and then the championship two-and-a-half days later. And we did it in a convincing way.
“In this kind of game it’s important to go 1-0 because Fulham made it difficult to play. But overall we controlled the game well.
“I’m happy and pleased because we have great players in midfield. I could afford to rest Jack [Wilshere] today, who is such a great player as well. That is good news. We have young, British and England players who get a chance with us.”
Wenger continued: “It was important to respond straight away. We had a disappointing result against Villa and we’ve had two convincing wins.
“People can focus too much on who you will buy and forget a bit how good the players here are. They are young players and there is much more to come for them.
“Let’s do it step by step. We have a big game on Tuesday night [against Fenebahce]. To get into the group stage of the Champions League, we want to take that opportunity.”
