Chelsea must expect to win the Premier League title this season, according to former Manchester United defender Gary Neville.

The Blues appointed club legend Jose Mourinho as Rafael Benítez’s successor in June after the Portuguese coach called time on his first Blues reign in 2007.

Mourinho has already signed Andre Schürrle and Marco van Ginkel this summer, while the west London side have tested United’s resolve with two bids for unhappy striker Wayne Rooney.

And Neville reckons failure to bring the Premier League trophy back to Stamford Bridge would be a major disappointment for the Europa League holders.

“They’ve got to expect to win the league, it’s as simple as that,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Chelsea have got nothing else to aim for than the Premier League title. That’s what Jose Mourinho has got to be thinking about and anything other than that would be a disappointment.

“There’s a very different make-up to this Chelsea squad than the one Mourinho picked up in 2005 and I think he’s going to be forced to play a different way.

“I think he will want to get a balance between defence and attack, but he’ll be forced to do it a slightly different way and, in fact, the owner will demand it in a different way.

“That’s what he’s been trying to get to all these years.”
