Steve Bruce could not hide his delight after watching his Hull City side hold on for more than an hour with 10 men as they picked up their first Premier League win of the season at against Norwich City.

Robbie Brady’s penalty gave the hosts the lead in the 22nd minute, before Yannick Sagbo was sent off for a headbutt on Norwich captain Russell Martin.

And Bruce was thrilled to see his side show such determination as they won their first points of the season following their 2-0 loss to Chelsea last Sunday.

“We are obviously delighted to get up and running, it was vitally important,” Bruce said. “We couldn’t have made it more difficult for ourselves with the sending off.

“We always knew this would be a big game for us, at home. We are delighted we have got away with it and defended remarkably well for long periods. For an hour or so we’ve had to defend.

“It gives us a lot of confidence that we can play at this level. We have got to be at our best but we can take some pride in our performance.”

Meanwhile, Canaries boss Chris Hughton did not feel his side deserved to concede a penalty when Michael Turner fouled Sagbo in the box.

“I thought the penalty was soft,” said Hughton. “If you are going to give that as a penalty then you are going to give so many of them in every game.

“Shortly before that Michael Turner gets pushed in the box by Curtis Davies and for me that is a bigger claim for penalty than the one he’s given. So I feel really aggrieved with that.”
