Jose Mourinho has thanked Roman Abramovich after the Chelsea owner paid a visit to the home dressing room before the Blues’ opening Premier League victory over Hull City.

The Russian billionaire came to address the players before the match as Mourinho geared up for his first home game in charge of the west London club since returning to Stamford Bridge.

And Mourinho, who watched as goals from Oscar and Frank Lampard handed his side a 2-0 win over the newly-promoted Tigers, was thrilled to see Abramovich make the gesture before kick-off.

“It’s the fifth season I’ve started with Chelsea,” Mourinho said. “We had Mr Abramovich in the dressing room with us for the first time in those years before the match. It was a moment wishing everyone the best, the medical department and the players not selected.

“To have Mr Abramovich coming from his holiday to be with the team meant a lot to all of us. We are together and know where we want to go. I think it’s great, especially for the players, to feel the atmosphere around. We have kids who need stability and we want to give them conditions to do well.

“We need to win matches but we can try to make this progress at the same time: get results and support the boys.”
