Liverpool 1 Stoke 0: Brendan Rodgers hails ‘outstanding’ display
Liverpool 1 Stoke 0: Brendan Rodgers heaped praise on his side after watching them edge to an opening-day victory
Brendan Rodgers heaped praise on his Liverpool side after watching them edge to an opening-day victory over Stoke City on Saturday.
Daniel Sturridge netted the only goal of the game in the 37th minute with a low strike as Liverpool dominated proceedings at Anfield.
Stoke had a brilliant opportunity to level from the spot in the dying moments after Daniel Agger handled in the box, but Anfield debutant Simon Mignolet saved Jon Walters’ penalty.
And Rodgers was thrilled with his side’s dominant display as they secured their first opening-day win at home since 2001.
“I was so pleased for the players because they’ve worked tireless and we start our season on a great three points,” Rodgers told BT Sport.
“I thought the fluidity and the flow of our game was good. Our passing and our combination play was excellent. That flexibility and the movement at the top end of the field was exceptional.
“Our intensity in the game right from the off was outstanding. All across the board, [we got] three points, we’re top of the league, so we’re happy!”
Rodgers did however admit concerns about his side’s inability to kill the game off despite creating so many opportunities.
“It’s always a concern when you dominate a game so much and create so many chances,” he continued.
“I think we had 15 shots on target and you’ve got to score them. Today we only scored the one, but obviously if that’s what it takes, you do whatever it takes to get the result.”
And reflecting on Mignolet’s Anfield debut, Rodgers added: “We brought him here because he is a top, top goalkeeper. We rate him highly, but I thought overall our performance level was outstanding today.”
