Simon Mignolet admitted he had to overcome some debut nerves after the Liverpool goalkeeper’s late penalty save earned the Reds an opening-day victory over Stoke City at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers’ men took the lead in the 37th minute when Daniel Sturridge thumped home a low drive from 25 yards into the bottom-right corner.

The home side looked bright throughout and had numerous chances to extend their lead, but a man-of-the-match display from Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal kept the Potters in the game.

The visitors then had a glorious chance to snatch a point from the penalty spot at the death after Daniel Agger handled the ball in the box.

But Mignolet, who joined Liverpool from Sunderland this summer, dived low to his right to deny Jon Walters an equaliser.

“Yeah obviously [I was nervous],” Mignolet told BT Sport. “It was my first Premier League game for Liverpool and I was playing in front of the Kop.

“The first 15 minutes, I had to adapt myself a bit. But I kept my nerve and I came through.”

The Belgian continued: “You always pick a corner and today I picked the right one. I was lucky to stop the rebound as well.

“I’m very pleased we won the three points with a clean sheet, because that’s the most important thing. And obviously if you save a penalty in the last minute of your debut in the Premier League then you’re a happy man.

“I think we deserved to win. We played a good game and had loads of chances. Asmir on the other side also played a good game. We didn’t manage to get a second goal but I think we deserved to win the game.”
