Liverpool’s Rodgers praises Agger for loyalty despite several offers
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praises the loyalty of his new vice-captain Daniel Agger after a "number of bids"
Brendan Rodgers has praised Daniel Agger for showing unwavering loyalty to Liverpool, despite being the subject of a “number of offers” over the past season.
The Reds manager named the Denmark international as his new vice-captain following Jamie Carragher’s retirement at the end of the 2012-13 campaign.
La Liga champions Barcelona have been linked with a £17m offer for the Reds centre-half in recent days as the Catalan side look to bolster their defensive options.
And Rodgers spoke of his own admiration for the centre-half, while revealing the Dane has the full respect of his peers in the Liverpool dressing room.
“He’s very well respected among the supporters, and ultimately, amongst his peers,” said Rodgers.
“I felt losing someone like Jamie Carragher that it was important that I took my time with the decision. They are totally different characters.”
He added: “He’s very proud to be at Liverpool. I found him true to his word from my first conversation with him as Liverpool manager.
“We’ve had a number of offers for him since I’ve been at the club. He’s commitment is unwavering towards Liverpool. That gave me great faith. He was honoured to be at the club.”
Agger has racked up over 155 Premier League appearances for the Merseyside outfit after joining Liverpool in a £6m deal from Brondby in 2006.
