Brendan Rodgers has insisted Liverpool’s new vice-captain Daniel Agger didn’t feature in a 1-0 loss to Celtic purely due to a knee injury amid talk of a bid from Barcelona.

The Denmark international, who was handed Jamie Carragher’s former role on Friday, was absent from the club’s final pre-season friendly as Andre Wisdom deputised at centre-half.

Barcelona have been linked with a £17m offer for the former Brondby defender in recent days as Gerardo Martino looks to bolster his centre-half options ahead of the new La Liga term.

But Rodgers revealed Agger hadn’t taken part in training this week after picking up a knock in Steven Gerrard’s testimonial last Saturday and added that there was no update on the reported interest from Barça.

“I think the two things with Daniel,” Rodgers told a post-match news conference at the Aviva Stadium.

“He had fluid in his knee after Steven Gerrard’s testimonial and he had to get that taken out. He hadn’t trained for the week.

“The only other development was that we named him as the vice-captain. Nothing in terms of Barcelona.

“He’s a top player and really wants to work with the club and I’m really looking forward to him and his role and working with him again this season.”

Agger has scored 12 goals in 209 appearances for Liverpool after moving to the Reds in a £6m deal from Brondby in 2006.
