Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool are “in control” of Luis Suárez’s future and is confident the Uruguayan will remain at Anfield beyond the summer.

The Reds striker won’t feature in the Merseyside outfit’s pre-season friendly against Celtic at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday as he continues to train alone at the club’s Melwood complex following his controversial interview earlier this week.

Earlier on Friday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted the Gunners will continue in their attempts to sign the South American, despite two failed bids for the Reds forward.

But despite Suárez’s pleas to be allowed to join a club playing in the Champions League, the Liverpool manager says the Reds won’t sell the forward – especially to any of their top-four rivals.

“We’re quite calm,” said Rodgers.

“I’ve always said that the club’s in control of the situation. Luis has three years left on his contract.

“He’s a player that we don’t want to sell. He’s a player valued very highly throughout the world. He’s someone we made a conscious effort last season to build a strong team around last season.

“We’ve no intention to sell – we’ve been very strong on that point. We’ll continue to be especially to a team who are our rivals. We don’t feel as if we’re fighting a losing battle.

“He’s very much a contracted player for Liverpool and I’m pretty confident he’ll remain that.”

The 40-year-old added that Suárez has shown regret for an explosive interview earlier this week, in which the Uruguayan called on Rodgers to honour his “promise” to let him leave Merseyside.

The 26-year-old claimed the Reds manager promised him he could leave this summer if Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League.

“He has [shown regret],” he added.

“He understands totally where we’re coming from. He’ll continue to do that. It’s been a difficult period for him.

“It’s my job to protect the group as well. Once he’s back in line with the spirit and commitment, then he’ll rejoin the group.”
