Liverpool’s Jose Enrique welcomes Aly Cissokho competition
Liverpool defender Jose Enrique insists he is welcoming competition from new loan signing Aly Cissokho for the left-back spot
Jose Enrique has welcomed competition from Liverpool’s new signing Aly Cissokho for the left-back berth.
Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his desire to have two quality options for each position in his side as the Northern Irishman looks to mastermind a top-four bid.
And France international Cissokho joined on a season-long loan from Valencia last week, but Enrique isn’t fazed by increased competition for places at the Merseyside outfit.
“I welcome the competition,” Enrique told the Liverpool Echo.
“It’s not my business to sign players. If Liverpool sign another left-back then I understand it because it was just me here last season. Sometimes
Glen Johnson had to play left-back.
“We need two players for every position, and I like it when I have competition.
“If you have somebody there who is really fighting for your position then it can bring more out of you because you know if you don’t play well then you’ll lose your place.
“Hopefully that helps me and I can play at my level as I did in the first six months when I first arrived at Liverpool.”
Enrique has scored two goals in 66 Premier League appearances for Liverpool after a £5m switch from Newcastle United in 2011.
