‘Liverpool’s Sturridge has all attributes of world-class striker’

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge possesses all the attributes needed to be a world-class striker.

The 23-year-old has received the majority of the early season plaudits after scoring the winner in both of Liverpool’s Premier League victories over Stoke City and Aston Villa.

Sturridge has now scored 12 goals in 17 top-flight games following his £12m move from Chelsea in January as the England international continues to feel the benefit of regular first-team action.

He was painted as a difficult character to coach during his spells at Chelsea and Manchester City, but Rodgers heaped praise on the striker’s attitude and work ethic during his eight months at Anfield.

“If you assess some of the world’s great strikers, they have pace, power, the touch, great in the air, two good feet, super quick. He possesses all of that,” Rodgers said.

“I hear people talk about him on radio shows and on television, and some people have mentioned this difficult character.

“He’s a terrific boy and a wonderful lad. He was a young player at some big clubs. He knew he was a good player and wanted to show that.

“When you’re a young player at a big club, you’re fighting for your place in the hierarchy of the group.

“He’s probably been disappointed when he hasn’t been able to play in a position that he’s good at.”

Sturridge picked up a heel injury in England’s 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in May which has affected the striker’s preparations in pre-season.

And Rodgers is confident there is much more to come from the Liverpool forward once he regains full match fitness.

“The frightening thing about Daniel is that he’s still got a bit to go in terms of his fitness,” added Rodgers.

“He missed nearly all of pre-season. He’s only been back two weeks. He’s actually still getting up to speed.

“Once he’s fully fit, he will be even better. It’s a mark of how hard he has worked in this short period of time.”
